UNIVERSITY OF LONDON EXTERNAL SYSTEM

The University of London (UOL as it is more commonly known) received its Royal Charter in 1836 and can trace its origins back to the 1820‘s when University College first started. At the time the only other English universities were Oxford and Cambridge. Historically, UOL has led the way in the development of higher education in England, including being the first to admit women to degrees and appoint women professors.

One of the leading Universities in Europe, its world class Federation of nineteen colleges and nine institutes situated across the whole of Greater London and beyond, provide and unrivalled range of education and research opportunities of outstanding breadth and quality. While the colleges vary considerably in age, size and the range of courses, they all award University of London degrees. They all work together to ensure the standard of degrees, and are committed to undergraduate and/or post graduate teaching
of the highest quality in a world class research environment. The range and breadth of activity within UOL provides it with a unique character and high level of distinction.

Many of the colleges of the University are ranked as being amongst the leading institution in the world. The colleges of the University include: London School of Economics and Political Science; Imperial College London; Kings College London; School of Oriental and African Studies; University College London; Goldsmith College; Royal Holloway; and London Business School.

The External System

The University of London External System was established in 1858 in order to make the University’s degrees accessible to students who could not attend the university. The External System currently offers more than 100 programmes and now has over 47,000 students studying for diplomas, degrees, post graduate diplomas and masters in more than 190 countries making it a truly world-wide degree.

One of the special features of the programme is that student are able to contact other students using the student to student network. The database can be accessed through the web site from anywhere in the world. Students will be able to search by qualification being studied, country, city, state, enabling them to contact other students studying the same programme anywhere in the world.

The programmes offered by the external programme are managed by the individual colleges. The same academic staff, who teaches the students coming to London to study, plan the degree syllabuses, set examination papers, mark scripts and develop study materials for external students. The examination questions are prepared in London and the examination papers despatched to over 600 examination centres in over 150 countries worldwide prior to the examination dates. Once the scripts have been completed they are returned to us and double marked by academics of the University. In the case of the programmes contained in this prospectus, The London Economics and Political Science, better known as LSE and Royal Holloway are responsible for the academic direction.

It is written into the statutes of the University that ‘Candidates granted degrees and other awards shall have attained the same academic standard irrespective of mode or place of study or examination.’ There is only one University of London degree, and it is awarded both to students attending in London and external students.

The University maintains standards for the external programme through a quality assurance framework, in which a college or group of colleges of the University takes responsibility for the quality of each individual programme, in the same way as they would be responsible for the quality of programmes for their students in London.
