 Aimed at:

The LLB degree awarded by the University of London is a world-class qualification which is internationally recognised and respected. This subject is aimed at those wish to study law and pursue a legal career as a solicitor or barrister. The LLB is recognised by the Law Society and the General Council of the Bar as satisfying the requirements of the academic stage of legal education to become a solicitor or barrister (provided they study European Law as one of the optional subjects). Alternatively, holders of the LLB degree may undertake postgraduate legal studies or use it as a basis of entering a wide range of careers as the qualification is highly recognised as demanding and academically rigorous.

Non-graduate entry- Entry Requirements:

(Pre-registration with the University of London external system is required) In order to satisfy the entrance requirements for the LLB you must normally be at least 17 years of age at the time of registration and have passes in:

• either two subjects at GCE ‘A’ level and at least three further subjects at GCSE/GCE ‘O’ level at Grade C or above
• or three subjects at GCE ‘A’ level (with one ‘A’ level at not less than Grade D)
• or three subjects at GCE ‘A’ level and one further subject at GCSE/GCE ‘O’ level at Grade C or above
• or two subjects at GCE ‘A’ level, plus two further subjects at GCE ‘AS’ level

English language requirement

The language of instruction, reading and assessment is English; success in the LLB requires a good level of English competence. Any candidates in doubt as to their abilities in written and/or oral English are strongly advised to undertake English language courses and tests before enrolling on the programme.

The Undergraduate Laws Programme policy on English language requirements is that all applicants must:

• sign a statement on their application form acknowledging that they are aware of the required English language standard; and
• verify that they either have met the required standard or are undertaking examinations/proficiency tests to meet it.

Candidates will usually be considered to meet the English language requirements on the basis that:

• their first language/mother tongue is English;
• or they provide satisfactory evidence showing that they have had:
- substantial (minimum of 18 months) education (secondary or higher) conducted in English; or
- substantial (minimum of 18 months) work experience conducted in English; or
- passed acceptable examinations in English equivalent to GCSE/GCE ‘O’ Level English Language grade C; or
- passed, at an appropriate level, a test of proficiency in English acceptable to the University.

Graduate entry – Entry Requirements:

The following are eligible to apply for graduate entry:
• graduates holding a full first degree from a state university in the United Kingdom or another European
country or in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong SAR, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Africa or the Caribbean
• graduates holding a full first degree from a regionally accredited institution in the USA
• graduates holding a full first degree from an Indian Institute of Technology or a four-year, full-time first degree from a recognised university or a three-year, fulltime first degree from a limited number of acceptable universities in India
• graduates holding a four-year full-time first degree from a limited number of acceptable universities in Vietnam.
Note: Applications from students with other degrees not listed above will be considered at the discretion of
the University. Professional qualifications cannot be considered for graduate entry.

• Three optional subjects from the list of optional subjects

*( provided the subject has not been taken in Final Part 1)

Graduate Entry Route B:

First Year:
Three subjects from the following four:

• Criminal Law
• Public Law
• Elements of the Law of Contract
• Common Law Reasoning and Institutions

Second Year:
• The outstanding subjects from the First Year list, and
• Two subjects from:
-Law of Tort
-Law of Trusts
-Land Law.

Third Year:
• The outstanding subjects from the Second Year list, and
• Two subjects from the optional Subject list
(which are final year options of Scheme B**).

N.B. Not all optional subjects may be available at MCL although students may study them independently.
Please confirm with MCL as to which optional subjects will be available in your chosen session.

Method of Assessment:

Written Examinations (save for legal research skills as an element of the Common Law Reasoning and Institutions subject. Students seeking an LLB that is also a Qualifying Law Degree (satisfying the academic stage of training to become a solicitor or barrister) must compile and submit a ‘portfolio’ (skills portfolio) in their final year of study.

Career Progression:

On completion of the LLB degree, students may apply for the Legal Practice Course ((LPC), the vocational
stage of legal education to become a solicitor), or the Bar Vocational Course ((BVC), the vocational stage of legal education to become a barrister).

Alternatively, holders of the LLB degree may undertake postgraduate legal studies (LLM or MPhil) or use it as a basis of entering a wide range of careers as the qualification is highly recognised as demanding and academically rigorous.
